Talk about the last time you went abroad

You should mention

Which country you travelled to

What the country was like

Whether you will go there again

The last time I went abroad was to visit a friend in Italy. He is Italian and we met several years ago at University in England. The whole trip was a bit of an adventure, as I did not fly to Italy I went there by road, on my motorbike. I caught the ferry at Portsmouth, landed at Le Havre and set off via France to get to Italy. France is very nice and I really enjoyed travelling through the French countryside. In fact I wish I could have had more time to appreciate everything I was seeing. But Italy was my destination and it wasn’t long before I was travelling down the winding roads of the Italian Alps.

The first major city I came to was the Sea Port of Genoa and the views along the coast were just stunning. The traffic in Genoa was very heavy but luckily most of the people using the roads were riding scooters. The next big city was Milan but I only passed by on the motorway so I didn’t get to see very much. To be honest I shouldn’t have gone past Milan but I took the wrong turning in Genoa After my little mistake it was motorway all the way to Rome where I had arranged to meet my friend. I arrived at Rome at about midnight and I had to get my friend out of bed. He thought that I had decided to stop off somewhere so he decided to turn-in for the night.

The next day I started to look around Rome and what a fantastic place it is. There is just so much to see in Rome and I know in the short time I was there I missed so much. However I got to see the Colossian and lots of old buildings. But best of all was the countless Roman ruins that seem to be everywhere in the City. Going to Rome is like stepping back in time. I’m sure it is the closest I will ever come to experiencing living history.

On the return trip home I stopped off at Siena, Florence and Pisa. Siena is where the famous horse race around the town square is held and I would really like to see that one-day. Siena is truly a beautiful place and the atmosphere generated by the architecture needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated. Florence is full of character and it has a very special atmosphere. The Ponte Vecchio Bridge over the Arno River is a sight I will never forget. I stopped off at Pisa to see The Leaning Tower and it really is odd to see a building leaning in that way. But again it is a good memory to have. After Pisa it was back into France and the ferry home. For sure I will return to Italy not only to see my friend but also to see more of the things I missed.
